Pergolide is the medication of choice to treat pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), also called Cushing’s disease, in horses. This drug relieves the most common signs of PPID, including abnormal hair growth, excessive sweating, muscle wasting, susceptibility to infections, and increased risk of laminitis.

Pergolide has been available as a loose or encapsulated powder or in a liquid suspension. Recently, Boehringer Ingleheim (Canada) Ltd. has introduced Prascend, a tablet form of the medication available in blister packs. This form offers increased stability and shelf life, easy handling, and premeasured amounts. Directions for use indicate that half a tablet is enough for a very small pony or Miniature Horse, while the largest draft horses might need as many as four tablets a day.

Owners whose horses or ponies have signs consistent with PPID should contact a veterinarian to have their equines evaluated and start treatment if necessary. PPID can’t be cured, and affected animals must be treated throughout their lifetimes for best results.
