Known for its strength, kind disposition, and endurance, the Criollo is the native horse of several South American countries, including Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay.

With a height that ranges from 14 to 15 hands, Criollos are not tall horses, but a deep chest and heart-girth, as well as well-sprung ribs, offer plenty of surface area for long-legged riders to feel comfortable. Well-angulated shoulders, broad loins, low-set hocks, and resilient hooves add to the breed’s durability.

In addition to its physical hardiness, Criollos are sensible mounts that possess equal measures of intelligence and willingness.  According to breed enthusiasts, Criollos have a tenacious work ethic. This breed is used for working cattle, pleasure riding, and endurance events.

Criollos are known for their ability to maintain body condition, even in the most inhospitable environments. Well-fed Criollos must be watched closely, as those given access to high-quality forages and feedstuffs may become obese, which could put them at risk for other health problems, such as metabolic syndrome and laminitis.
